I came up with our Teen Support Bag Program after my own cancer diagnosis at 17 years old. During that time, I wasn’t seeing much support for teenagers dealing with cancer. I received a few bags with items that were targeted towards little kids, and I felt those items were almost wasted on me. As I was going through my surgeries and recoveries, I started thinking to myself that there should be some sort of item or support piece for teenagers specifically.
The first bag I gave out was in June of 2012. Since that time, we have added items, removed items, and adjusted items as we have received feedback. Most recently, we have heard from Child Life specialists in hospitals that it would be beneficial to add another item that could help the teenagers pass the time.
Since we have seen the increase in popularity of the adult coloring books grow as an item for stress release and just pure fun, we thought it would be a great item for the Teen Support Bags.
This month, we will send out our first batch of Teen Support Bags with the new adult coloring book, pack of colored pencils and a pencil sharpener. We are very grateful for the ongoing financial support that enables us to keep funds available to increase the bag items as well as increase the number of hospital partners.
We currently ship our bags to 72 hospitals that are in 32 states and DC! I’m so happy that my idea has turned into such an important program so that we can help teenagers battling cancer.
